JetBrains Issues Free IntelliJ IDEA User Licenses to Codehaus for Open Source Projects
Expanded Support Program Continues to Make Leading Java IDE Available to Even More Open Source Developers
February 15, 2005
PRAGUE, Czech Republic — February 15, 2005 — JetBrains™, Inc., creators of intelligent, productivity-enhancing tools, today announced it will provide a free user license for its widely acclaimed IntelliJ IDEA integrated development environment for Java, to Codehaus, an Open Source project repository with a strong emphasis on Java. Because this will be a Codehaus-wide license, all Codehaus developers will now have available to them the power and intelligence of JetBrains’ award-winning commercial development tool in their Open Source development projects.
Active in Open Source development for several years, Codehaus (www.codehaus.org) is a neutral environment for developers to host projects focused on developing quality components that meet real world needs. It presently has approximately 200 active members. Current Codehaus projects include Groovy, a new agile dynamic language for the JVM; PicoContainer, a lightweight embeddable container for components that honor Dependency Injection; Open EJB, an Open Source, modular, configurable and extendable EJB Container System and EJB Server that is part of the Apache Geronimo Open Source J2EE implementation; and AspectWerkz, a dynamic, lightweight and high-performance Java AOP framework. Additional information on Codehaus and all of the company’s Open Source projects is available at www.codehaus.org.
“”There has been growing interest in IntelliJ IDEA by members of Codehaus,”” said Bob McWhirter, Codehaus founder. “The Groovy project was the first to independently ask for and receive a license for IntelliJ IDEA. Now that JetBrains has granted Codehaus the rights to distribute licenses amongst our subscribers, this generous arrangement allows us to provide any of our members with the power of IntelliJ IDEA for our Java coding projects.”
Other open source developers can participate directly in the JetBrains Open Source Support Program and acquire a free IntelliJ IDEA user license if they are a contributor to an active and vital Open Source project that is recognized within the global Open Source community. Licenses will be valid for one year and will apply to all product upgrades during that period, with annual renewals required for continued use. Further details on the qualification process are available at https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/opensource/application.htm.
A free, fully functional 30-day evaluation copy of IntelliJ IDEA 4.5 is available to all developers at https://www.jetbrains.com.
