CLion 2024.2 EAP 3: Improved GDB Performance and Enhancements for Nova

The CLion 2024.2 EAP build (242.16677.29) is now out! It’s available from our website, via the Toolbox App, or as a snap package if you’re using Ubuntu.

Here are the highlights:

  • GDB performance has been improved (CPP-28780).
    • The new version comes bundled with GDB 14.2, which contains our patch to speed up variable expansion.
    • Starting from this version, we’re making the performance-boosting GDB Python API the default for getting data from the debugger.
  • There’s now a workaround for several issues affecting GDB pretty printers. Simply install debug symbols for libstdc++ to fix the following issues:
    • Exception in std::stringbuf pretty printer (CPP-37678).
    • No std::stringstream rendering while debugging (CPP-21729).
    • GDB doesn’t recognize STL containers for clang/clang++ (CPP-7662).
    • Summary string parsing error or “<incomplete type>” with clang compiler used on Linux (CPP-26951).
  • We’ve added several enhancements for CLion Nova.
    • Some problems with encoding preventing the opening of non-UTF-8 files have been resolved (CPP-36007).
    • Field offsets and sizes are now shown on hover (CPP-36054).
    • The quick documentation pop-up shown on hover now includes quick-fixes (CPP-36306).

The full release notes are available here. Find out more about our plans for this release in the CLion 2024.2 roadmap.
