Continuing Positive Impact: This Year’s AI4SE Interns in their New Roles at JetBrains

In our last post, we introduced the talented intern cohort from our AI for Software Engineering (AI4SE) research partnership with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft).

In this post, we’re excited to spotlight the next chapter in their journey: their evolution from interns to full-time members of our tech team. As interns, they didn’t just stand by and observe: they immersed themselves in real projects, tackling complex challenges with technologies at the core of our business.

We’ll look at the cutting-edge technologies they got to work with, the impact their work had on our teams and products, and how their roles are growing as they transition to full-time employees.

Hands-on experience with cool technologies

“It was super exciting to be at this ‘for developers’ company during the times of rapid change in the development ecosystem caused by the AI disruption. What was especially cool was that you got to see and in some cases even participate in the internal operations of the company and development of existing or new products.”

Sergey

During their internship, the students had the chance to directly work with groundbreaking AI technologies which are integrated into software development tools. This exposure built their technical skills more rapidly and also empowered them to deliver impactful innovations.

With these hands-on experiences, our interns were able to sharpen their expertise. They also sparked real innovation that’s transforming how we build and maintain software.

For one, they enhanced team performance by being highly engaged and bringing fresh perspectives. The results of their work are being presented to various product teams, opening up avenues for collaboration on system improvement.

In addition, we saw an intern’s research evolve into a benchmark in a test generation feature that has already uncovered issues in the current approach. Another intern developed an AI assistance tool that continues to be used even after the relevant in-the-wild study finished.

These former students actively drove projects forward and have already left a measurable mark on their teams and organizations. We’re excited to see what they do next!

From intern to employee

“It’s really a great opportunity to keep working in research while being within the industry.”

Saga

Let’s see what these former students are going to be doing in their new roles:

Milan joins us as a researcher in our Software Testing Research team and will continue to explore new technologies and ideas in the field of AI.

I will be involved in several different projects, from creating experimental prototypes to conducting experiments with existing systems and improving these.

Nadine joins our Fleet team as a software engineer, continuing to advance the way developers interact with AI in their IDEs.

It’s really amazing to get the opportunity to help shape how these developer-AI workflows evolve, to ultimately create more seamless collaboration and boost developer productivity.

Saga switches from our Software Testing Research team (where she did her internship) to working as a researcher in our  Dynamic Program Analysis Research team.

It’s really a great opportunity to keep working in research while being within the industry. In my new team, I’ll be focusing on tracing LLM agents, to help developers who develop agents better understand and improve how their agents work.

Sergey has two roles: one in quality assurance and one as a researcher on our Software Testing Research team.

I believe it is wonderful that JetBrains provides the opportunities to be involved in different teams and areas. It allows people to gain more diverse experiences and apply their knowledge in other areas in hopes of making a positive impact.

Future growth with us at JetBrains

“JetBrains offers the perfect mix of deep tech, user-centric culture, and long-term thinking, so I’m beyond excited to grow with it.”

Nadine

Stepping into a new role as an employee unlocks exciting opportunities for professional growth. Our former interns will now be able to take on more challenging projects and explore new specialties, setting the stage for future career advancement.

Going from intern to full-time employee reflects the commitment and growth of these four within our company. We are looking forward to seeing them continue to develop their skills and make an impact here at JetBrains!
