The State of Developer Ecosystem 2023
We’re thrilled to announce the release of the State of Developer Ecosystem 2023 report, packed with valuable insights and captivating findings. The report is based on the answers provided by more than 26,000 respondents from all around the globe, who generously contributed to our survey between June and July of this year.
For the last 7 years, we’ve been striving to understand the changing landscape of technology and its implications for developers worldwide. In the State of Developer Ecosystem, we delve into programming languages, tools, frameworks, education fields, as well as developers’ lifestyles and habits to give you a complete picture of the current trends in the tech industry.
In response to the booming interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI), we’ve included questions that aim to reveal developers’ views on AI, their concerns, readiness to delegate regular coding-related activities to AI, and the current adoption status of AI-integrated tools.
Here are our key takeaways on Artificial Intelligence (AI):
- 77% of developers use ChatGPT, and 46% use GitHub Copilot.
- 59% of programmers lack trust in AI tools for security reasons, while 42% have expressed ethical concerns about using AI services. 28% informed us that their company’s policy limits the use of AI generative tools, and 19% believe that AI will become hostile to humans.
As always, we’ve kept a close eye on the programming language landscape:
- In 2023, Scala, Go, and Kotlin developers ranked as the top three highest-paid.
- Over the last three years, the three top languages (JavaScript, Python, HTML/CSS) have maintained their positions, but JavaScript’s share has continually decreased, giving space to TypeScript. It’s plausible that JavaScript will continue to decline slightly, as JavaScript programmers report a higher likelihood of learning another language than the other programmers surveyed.
- The majority of Kotlin developers (66%) use the language for Android and/or server-side applications. However, the share of Kotlin Multiplatform users has shown steady growth over recent years.
In the report, we also share our findings about developer demographics:
- Since 2021, the survey data has consistently shown no improvement in the share of female developers. The fact that only 5% of developers are women indicates an enduring and enormous gender gap throughout the industry.
- Sadly, 73% of developers have experienced burnout in their career.
- Mobile app usage for communication tools (email, messaging, etc.) has clearly taken a dive after peaking in 2020 and 2021. The probable reason for this is that more employees are returning to the office, which many companies seem to be encouraging.
