JetBrains Academy LiveStream Livestreams Tools for Teaching

Lazy Teachers, Involved Students: Active Learning with the Capture the Flag Game

Join us on Tuesday, August 13, at 3:00 pm UTC for the livestream in the JetBrains Academy series for educators, Lazy Teachers, Involved Students: Active Learning with the Capture the Flag Game

The relevance of traditional education and the necessity of an academic degree have long been debated in the tech industry. The rapid pace of IT might outstrip the ability of classical educational systems to keep up, and as digital natives enter the academic field, their learning challenges might differ from those of previous generations. (Check out our livestream on how to approach Gen Z.)

While some students thrive in classical academic environments, others excel through active learning, hands-on experience, and mentorship, forging their own unique paths.

Our speaker, Ivan Agarkov, is a self-taught IT professional without a formal degree in the field who began his career at the age of 13. His journey has taken him from security engineer to freelance consultant and infrastructure lead at Wargaming. With over a decade of teaching experience, Ivan is committed to making passive learning active, fun, and engaging, helping students solve assignments and correct mistakes on their own.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The principles of Capture the Flag (CTF) and how to apply them to your lessons.
  • Practical examples of CTF challenges in educational settings.
  • Student feedback on this approach to learning.
  • How to become a “lazy teacher” who empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey.
