RustRover Is Released and Includes a Free Non-Commercial Option
Since the announcement of the RustRover Public Preview eight months ago, we’ve been hard at work shaping our vision for this feature-rich Rust IDE. Today, we’re excited to announce the general availability of this brand-new IDE, which joins our existing family of JetBrains IDEs.
We’d like to thank all the early adopters for their trust, continuous support, vigorous testing, and valuable feedback, which has enabled us to fix the most critical issues ahead of the general release. Our goal now is to keep the fires of your love for Rust burning by ensuring we deliver the best IDE we possibly can.
New licensing model
Today is not just about the release of RustRover, a JetBrains IDE. We have even more exciting news to share. For RustRover, we are now providing a new licensing model that consists of two plans:
- Free individual non-commercial
- Paid commercial
If you are an individual wanting to use RustRover for non-commercial purposes, you can use the IDE for free. However, if you’re planning on using RustRover for commercial purposes, you need to purchase a license, as with our other products.
To keep the price down, we’ve trimmed some of the features that are less used. Most of these features are still available as paid or free plugins so that you can adjust the IDE to your needs.
Regardless of whether you’re self-employed or working for a company, you need to buy a paid commercial license for commercial usage. As part of the launch, we’re offering a 50% discount on an annual subscription plan if you purchase your commercial license before June 21, 2024.
Commercial vs. Non-commercial usage
As per our license agreement, any activity from which you, as a product user, obtain regular direct or indirect income would be classified as commercial usage. We’ve prepared a detailed FAQ with multiple scenarios. As always, you’re welcome to reach out to sales@jetbrains.com with any questions.
This is a new licensing model for us, as we want to provide the IDE to our users for free for non-commercial use. The model currently operates on an honor system in which you declare that you won’t be using RustRover for commercial purposes. While we hope this will work, we may need to make some adjustments depending on how things go.
It’s also important to note that if you’re using a non-commercial license, you cannot opt out of the collection of anonymous usage statistics. This is similar to our Early Access Program (where statistics is opt-out) and in compliance with our Privacy Policy
Support for CLion and IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate
IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate will include support for the Rust plugin for free. However, to use the plugin in CLion, you’ll need a commercial RustRover license or buy it separately.
What’s next
Our Public Preview program showed us that there’s a definite demand for a dedicated Rust IDE. We intend to keep pouring our passion into RustRover and maintain the same frequent release cadence as we did during the EAP. With this in mind, we’d love for you to continue providing feedback!
