JetBrains Continues Support of Apache Software Projects with Free IntelliJ IDEA Licenses
JetBrains renews existing licenses as part of company’s recently announced Open Source Support Initiative
February 15, 2005
PRAGUE, Czech Republic — February 15, 2005 — JetBrains™, Inc., creators of intelligent, productivity-enhancing tools, announced it will renew and expand its program of free IntelliJ IDEA user licenses to Apache Software Foundation developers, on a project-by-project basis. The Foundation, a membership-based, not-for-profit corporation, supports software development for the widely respected Apache community of Open Source projects. JetBrains will issue the licenses through its recently formalized JetBrains Open Source Support Initiative.
The initial licenses under the new program will be issued to developers contributing to the Apache Directory Project who wish to use IntelliJ IDEA, the most powerful, intelligent and best implemented combination of application development tools available. The project is creating an enterprise directory server platform to allow management of Internet services like DNS (Domain Name Service), DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and SLP (Service Location Protocol) through LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol), which provides an efficient way to store information about people, groups, relationships, applications, computing resources, rules and much more.
The IntelliJ IDEA license renewals continue an existing JetBrains support policy that the company is now expanding to other Apache Open Source projects upon request. The Apache Directory Project is one of multiple efforts supported by an Apache incubation project.
“IntelliJ IDEA licenses for the Apache Directory Project have been in place for a year and we love working with it. It makes developing a real pleasure,” said Alex Karasulu, the project founder and lead who serves on the Preliminary Project Management Committee responsible for the Apache Directory Project. “IntelliJ IDEA helps pull projects together faster with fewer mistakes, higher quality and less debugging, so developers can be more productive. Making IntelliJ IDEA broadly available to Apache projects demonstrates a true commitment by JetBrains to the principles of the Open Source movement.”
The Apache Software Foundation provides organizational, legal and financial support to a broad range of projects. Its collaborative and meritocratic development process delivers enterprise-grade, freely available software that attracts large user communities. Developers contributing to any qualifying Open Source project including other Apache projects can apply for free, one-year IntelliJ IDEA user licenses. Details on the qualification process are available at https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/opensource/application.htm.
Commercial developers may obtain free, fully functional 30-day evaluation copies of IntelliJ IDEA 4.5 at https://www.jetbrains.com.
