Prague, Czech Republic, March 6, 2013 — JetBrains, the creators of IntelliJ IDEA, PhpStorm and other intelligent, productivity-enhancing tools for software and web developers, have just announced the availability of WebStorm 6.0, the new major version of its advanced JavaScript IDE.
To help web developers quickly start using exciting new languages, WebStorm 6.0 provides the unique ability to code in CoffeeScript, TypeScript or Dart with automatic compilation of these modern web development languages to JavaScript on the fly. The transpilation works transparently and on all platforms supported by the IDE, and supports LESS or Sass code transformation to CSS, as well as minified files and source maps generation. Based on the source maps, WebStorm 6.0 also offers a full-featured debugger for TypeScript, Dart or CoffeeScript code.
“No matter how great a new technology is, its adoption by the community rests on how well it is supported by developer tools. That’s where JetBrains comes in with well thought-out and carefully crafted integrations,” said Kirill Safonov, WebStorm project lead. “This release of WebStorm is no exception, with its excellent support for new languages such as TypeScript. In addition to providing full access to these new technologies, we’re also redefining existing workflows like we did with JavaScript libraries. WebStorm now understands minified and compiled files and smartly ignores them when analyzing code or providing code completion suggestions.”
Additional highlights in WebStorm 6.0 include:
- Live Edit, introduced in the previous release, now brings improved usability and support for HTML5 live editing.
- Revised approach to handling JavaScript libraries, allowing JS developers to work transparently with release versions of files stored in the project: the IDE uses them only when needed and ignores them the rest of the time.
- Fresh IDE look and feel, and Darcula, a new native dark UI theme for the IDE and the editor.
- Improved HTML and CSS, Sass and Less coding, with a re-designed HTML structure view and support for even faster coding using Emmet snippets in the editor.
- JavaScript code validation against Google Closure Linter added to the already available JSHint, JSLint, and own custom inspections.
These and some other features of WebStorm will soon become available in all JetBrains IDEs build on the IntelliJ Platform, including PhpStorm, RubyMine, PyCharm, AppCode and IntelliJ IDEA.
