JetBrains Makes its Products Free for Students

Hello everyone,

If you’re on social media, you may have noticed that we have our ears to the ground, always listening and looking for new ideas.

Who could have guessed that this tweet would become a reality one week later!

Everything starts with learning. And what we learn when we’re young defines what we become and quite often what we are able to achieve in our lives. So, how do we make sure today’s students learn from the best? We at JetBrains believe we can do something about this.

JetBrains has a proud tradition of supporting students and academia with discounted Academic Licenses. But today we are going a step further and announcing free licenses for eligible students and teachers around the world! JetBrains Student License makes our entire product line of IDEs AND .NET Tools (while TeamCity and YouTrack already have free versions or plans) freely available to anybody who meets our simple criteria.

Getting Started with a Student License

The free JetBrains Student License replaces the discounted Academic License for all IDEs and .NET Tools products. All current Academic License owners (that are not organizations) will be able to upgrade/renew to Personal Licenses. If you are still a student or teacher, you can verify your status and start using our products for free.

To get started, you will need to have or register for your free JetBrains Account and either an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) or a unique .edu email address for verification.

Initially, these are the only ways to validate your eligibility, however we’ll be adding more in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for further updates.

[UPDATE September 24th, 19:30 CEST] We’ve just updated our student verification system with many new university domains supported! If yours isn’t already there, add it for approval.

Visit jetbrains.com/student to apply now and you will be up and running in a matter of minutes! Student Licenses are valid for one year and then you will need to re-apply.

JetBrains Student License Program

Using JetBrains Tools in the Classroom

Student Licenses are just for students and teachers. Our existing Classroom License already allows faculty members to use our products for free, in your classrooms for teaching purposes. There will be no changes to this program and we encourage you to apply if this is your case.

If you are part of a commercial educational organization, you should contact our sales team to discuss special conditions that we can offer on product licenses.

For FAQ and to get started, visit jetbrains.com/student.

  1. ulgens says:

What about local domain suffiexes? My university email has an “.edu.tr”, it’s a valid university account but apply form doesn’t accept it.

  2. Frank Kubis says:

Mhm nice buts, Iam student and have no ISIC/ITIC membership or .edu mail. Would be nice if you could add more accepted domains like (.tu-dresden.de or htw-dresden.de or …)

    • Robert Demmer says:

Frank, this is on our radar but we had to start somewhere and the ISIC was the logically place. We will be adding more domains and I am making note of your request for .tu-dresden.de and htw-dresden.de. Thank you for your feedback and hold tight.

  3. Nikola says:

Hey, what about academic domain like .ac ?
I am not sure my faculty has .edu domain.

  4. Andrew Kuchev says:

I’m student of Higher School of Economics by Software Engineering program. Unfortunately, my university does not provide e-mails within .edu domain, it has only edu.hse.ru. Is it possible to apply this student program with such e-mail address? Thanks!

  5. Eça de Queiroz says:

My university’s website doesn’t have an academic domain like .edu.*, just the country’s domain http://www.tecnico.ulisboa.pt

  6. Wouter says:

I’m a student of the Fontys University of Applied Sciences (See also). Fontys doesn’t give Teachers nor students an .edu email address, however, they use @student.fontys.nl for students and @fontys.nl for teachers and other employees. Would you mind adding those?

  7. Stijn says:

Could you add ugent.be as well? Thanks!

  8. Thijs Deker says:

Hey, my university does not provide e-mails within .edu domain, they use firstname.lastname@student.stenden.com (first part after the @ says that we are students en the second part is the name of the university). Or else would it be nice to accept our own university it’s student cards (not ISIC).

  9. Milos says:

Hey there guys, great job! Just popping in to ask if you are planning to add the .ac domains (as in academic)? Since my faculty uses the @fon.bg.ac.rs domain. Keep up the good work!

  10. Andor says:

This is going to be even more difficult for countries like Denmark where there is no unified TLD for educational institutions, even though I’d really like to use this promotion. If you guys could add “stud.kea.dk” (kea.dk is used for faculty and staff) that would be really great!

  11. ertugrul says:

Our mail extension is @bilgiedu.net could you add please my universty. My university official website is http://www.bilgi.edu.tr but our university provide students to @bilgiedu.net mail extension

  12. Hello, i cannot apply with my email account.

    @xxx.xxx.edu.tr

  13. Miguel says:

Hi there! What about foreigners? My university only provides us with a correoa.uson.mx or alumnos.uson.mx email.

    • Robert Demmer says:

Miguel, we aren’t forgetting about those outside of the US such as people using ISIC. We have lots of requests and will try and evaluate them as soon as possible.

  14. Justin says:

Could you add edu.mt for University of Malta students please? Example email: (xyz001@um.edu.mt)

  15. Oscar says:

I think the easiest way would be to get a ISIC card.

    • Robert Demmer says:

Couldn’t agree more Oscar. Getting an the International Student Identification Card (ISIC) would be the quickest and most efficient way to gain access to our product portfolio for Student Licenses.

  16. Markus Cisler says:

    Hey there,

my university has no .edu emails, but students get @student.uni-kassel.de and @uni-kassel.de addresses. Any chance to add them at some point?

  17. Mary says:

Hi! Adding the .edu domain makes a lot of sense, unfortunately many countries seem to have other systems! In Sweden the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) uses @kth.se for all its students, could you add that to the list as well?

    • Robert Demmer says:

Thank you Mary and it is good news that Sweden uses some standardized format. We have added you to our list to look into.

      • Tommy Brunn says:

Sadly it’s not standardized here in Sweden. I used to go to Luleå University of Technology, where you got an address like @student.ltu.se. Staff have @ltu.se.

  18. Chris says:

@usask.ca for the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

  19. Would like to see support for edu.mercantec.dk email addresses.

  21. Jelena says:

Can you add @fer.hr for Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb?

  22. Solal Pirelli says:

    Great news!

    Some e-mail formats from Switzerland:

    @epfl.ch for the EPFL,
    @*.ethz.ch for the ETHZ,
@*.educanet2.ch for many high schools who use the educanet2 system.

Ideally, you could integrate with SWITCHaai</a, a federated authentication for many universities across Switzerland, but it might not be worth the development cost compared to an e-mail whitelist.

    Thanks!

  23. Thomas B. says:

Can you add @tuwien.ac.at to the list? It’s the technical university of Vienna, but we do not have edu addresses here in Austria, unfortunately.

  24. shahariar says:

Hi. Will Norwegian students be able to use the student license? We use @stud.XXX.no lots of places. For example, I use @stud.ntnu.no. Is it possible for you to add that on your list?

    Thanks!

    • shahariar says:

Xxx is the institute. Norwegian University of Science and Technology use @stud.ntnu.no and Oslo University College use @stud.hioa.no.

  25. Mike Barkmin says:

It would be nice if you can support @stud.uni-due.de this is the domain for the University Duisburg-Essen.

    Thanks for you great program.

  26. eric says:

I currently go to a community college. I don’t get a .edu email address. It was my issue with Amazon until I found the location to send my transcripts as proof. Anything like this available for students like myself?

    • Robert Demmer says:

Hi Eric, This isn’t available at the moment but we will do our best to validate eligible students. Hang tight and thank you for your support.

  27. Justin Lee says:

    McMaster University in Canada (mcmaster.ca)!

This is really, really cool ! Respect !!

  30. Markus S. says:

    Hi,

I’m from India and my email is .edu.in. Can that please be included?

    Thank you!!!

  32. Louis-Paul Dareau says:

Hello, could you add *@epita.fr emails please? I’m from a french computer science school!

  33. Nicolai says:

I study in Denmark, and at my university we use student.sdu.dk,
is it possible for you guys to add this one to?

    Best Regards!

I study in the Netherlands and we use *@student.saxion.nl could you add that one too?

    Kind regards,

    Thank you.

Please add @student.his.se for students at University of Skövde.

  42. Borian says:

Fontys universities also don’t give out .edu emails
    they have @student.fontys.nl

  43. Shukri says:

Would you please add domains of .edu ends with country domains, which seems many universities add their countries domain to their .edu domain which your system will not allowed to accept.

I have a problem with that such my email like most of others end with country suffix which is .edu.eg

  44. Mario says:

Well in my university the student email addresses end with @alum.us.es

    The univerity’s webpage is http://www.us.es

  45. Daniel García says:

  46. split says:

    Hi.
I’m a student on the technical college Wiz.
Management of my college gives “@c-league.jp”(‘c’ means ‘college’) mail address to students. This domain is used only for students.
    Please add the domain.

  47. Antwan says:

This seems like a awesome feature! I’ve been using phpStorm for a long time, and as a teacher I’ve made a lot of student very enthusiastic about the IDE. So I can understand this approach to generate more fans who will buy a commercial licence after graduating!

For me & my students, it’s @hr.nl (Hogeschool Rotterdam, The Netherlands)

  48. Youri says:

Great initiative! I’d like “@hr.nl” added.

  49. Student says:

Delft University of Technology students (@student.tudelft.nl) would also love to give Jetbrains software a shot!

  51. Tero Keinänen says:

Thank you for making your great products free to use for students! Finnish universities don’t have access to the .edu domain, could you please add @helsinki.fi, the domain for the University of Helsinki?

  53. Stefan O. says:

My university don’t provide an external e-mail-address :-/
    University: http://www.wb-fernstudium.de/

  54. Andreas Gerlach says:

In Germany you will also find Universities of Applied Sciences (in German Fachhochschule) usually ending with a domain like fh-xyz.de like the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne (.fh-koeln.de).

  55. Fredrik P says:

Our school does not have a edu specific domain at all (www.hig.no), its a university college though, any chance for us? The emails we get are x@hig.no

  56. Matias says:

Hey there! This is such great news! I’ve wanted to try ReSharper for a long time since we do mostly .NET on my school program. Could you please look into adding edu.ar addresses? Specifically, mine is myIDnumber@tecnicatura.frc.utn.edu.ar. That domain is specifically for a regional section of my University. The main webpage can be found at http://www.frc.utn.edu.ar/.

    Thank you from Argentina!

  57. Matthias says:

    Hi there,

great to hear about the new license model.

Could you add @uni-goettingen.de and @stud.uni-goettingen.de (www.uni-goettingen.de)? These correspond to students and staff.

  58. Daniel says:

I suppose you won’t be adding universities from Italy anytime soon then? :)

Our universities are in the form of unipmn.it, unict.it etc. A good initiative nonetheless.

  59. Abdul Mueid Akhtar says:

All South African higher education institutes use .ac.za domains. My university domain is tut.ac.za

Appreciate the kind gesture towards students.

  60. It’s a great idea, it will promote good development environments in schools. Thanks for this!

However, IMHO, you will have problems with such process to validate students accounts. It’s currently too automatic and you’ll always have requests that don’t match your criteria. How about to do something like Github does: a simple form with a student certificate upload requirement, validated by Jetbrains?

For instance in France, almost every school has its own domain (utt.fr, u-psud.fr, …) so it’s pretty difficult to regulate accounts based on the email.

I’d totally subscribe for such an account if available for me (my domaine is “u-psud.fr”), your products are currently the best on the market IMO.

  61. Alexandre says:

    Hello,

Thanks for this wonderful offer. This is, most French universities have custom domains under the .fr TLD. Mine is @ipb.fr for “Institut Polytechnique de Bordeaux” (Polytechnic Institue of Bordeaux). Website: http://www.ipb.fr/

Would you mind adding the ipb.fr domain?

  62. Carlos Florêncio says:

My university’s website doesn’t have an academic domain like .edu.*, http://www.isel.pt/

Emails are like *@alunos.isel.ipl.pt or *@alunos.isel.pt

Also ISIC/ITIC verification is currently unavailable.

  63. Arto V. says:

Awesome! Could you add support for @cs.helsinki.fi -mails as well — they are used by the CS Department staff and students at the University of Helsinki.

  64. Johan Jatko says:

Same as many others here, our school doesn.t have an .edu address.

It uses .ltu.se or @student.ltu.se (teachers have a different one).
University is “Luleå University of Technology”.

Would it be possible to add?

  65. Assaf says:

    ac.il also plz! :)

  66. Alek says:

Our University uses @edu.rtu.lv domain. Can you add it to allowed? Thx.

  67. Otso says:

Finland is really tricky if you wanna go based on email, because almost every school has their own domain. Some don’t even have that, but rather use the local city domain (e.g. @helsinki.fi).

Could you add @utu.fi? That is the domain for the University of Turku.

  68. Saad Ahmed says:

Thank you Jetbrains! I have tried to create an account but it is not accepting my university email i.e @ucp.edu.pk Could you please fix this so i could use your products which i cannot afford as a student but i am grateful to Jetbrains for empowering students with awesome dev tools!

  69. Kyle says:

Could you add @han.nl for students of Hogeschool Arnhem en Nijmegen in the Netherlands?

  70. Aidil says:

I’ve already used IntelliJ IDEA for a school project and it’s a really amazing IDE. I’d love to give the other products a go but *.edu.sg doesn’t seem to be supported just yet.

  71. Dirk says:

I’ll just leave my university here, too: Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB)
    http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/
    http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/index_en.htm (english version)

We got @rub.de for our mail-service.

  72. Mary says:

Hey, would you please add support for @stud.hs-offenburg.de? That’s the address of the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg, Germany :-)
    -> http://www.hs-offenburg.de

  73. Andreas Rubik says:

    Hey!
At first, I love that you make your products free for students, altough I bought an upgrade to my license not to long ago.
But I have one little request, could you add “@technikum-wien.at” to your filter? That would be really great!

  74. Jonathan says:

Canadian Universities are all over the place:

    University of Manitoba:
    myumanitoba.ca
    cs.umanitoba.ca
    old: cc.umanitoba.ca

    sfu.ca
    tru.ca
    twu.ca
    ubc.ca
    unbc.ca
    ufv.ca
    iu.ca

  75. Valentin Zbant says:

    Hello,

I am a student at the Faculty of Computer Science in Romania, Iasi and my address is @info.uaic.ro. Can be something done with this? I need very much the licence for IntelliJ and much more products.

  76. Bas says:

Great news! Unfortunately, our university doesn’t use .edu, so here is a request for Utrecht University (NL): @students.uu.nl

  77. João Fidalgo says:

My university’s website doesn’t have an academic domain like .edu.*, http://www.isec.pt/

    Emails are like *@isec.pt

  78. Christopher says:

I’m from France (Rouen), could you add @etu.univ-rouen.fr too ?
That’s a really greath thing to give student license for free !

  79. Asgeir says:

Students of Aalto University would be really thankful if you add @aalto.fi to your list :-)

  80. Lasse Riess says:

    Hi,
I’m on the Duale Hochschule Baden Württemberg Stuttgart (DHBW) @lehre.dhbw-stuttgart.de
    Thanks in advance!

  81. Jeremy David says:

Swiss universities each have their own domain (epfl.ch, heig-vd.ch, …) but all of them provide access to an SSO gateway (at https://www.switch.ch/en/aai/) that allows unified access to resources such as dreamspark.

  82. Anton says:

The swedish universities have domains like kth.se, lu.se, umu.se, chalmers.se, su.se. Please make us eligible. :)

  83. Miguel says:

My university doesn’t have an academic domain like .edu.*, http://www.fct.unl.pt/

  84. Semih says:

well in turkey.the domain for universities and with .edu.tr
Could you please add .edu.tr as well to the list of applicable domains.
    Thanks in advance.

  85. Ok, I realize this is going to be a hard one … Can you add @burgerSCHOOL.be, it’s the only domain name we have which contains something like SCHOOL :). @*.sint-michiel.be would be even better but that doesn’t even contain SCHOOL.

  86. piatkosia says:

Students in my university have mail_domain [index_number]@stud.uz.zgora.pl :(

  87. Michael Hulet says:

I’m a high school student, but I (to my knowledge) have neither an ISIC nor a .edu email address. What can I do to sign up?

  88. Rui Gomes says:

    My college uses @fe.up.pt

    up meaning University of Porto

    fe meaning Faculty of Engineering.

Would be great if you guys could add it!

    Congrats for the initiative.

  89. John Lacey says:

It would be great if edu.au — Australian educational institutions — could be added to the list. Though I might check out the classroom licence option. It would be great if my web development students could use PhpStorm.

  90. Barry Cantoe says:

There is no ability for this awesome product availability for homeschool students.

I’m actively teaching my 2 children (in High School, homeschooled) to program. Access to these tools would be AWESOME!.

Great news. In my University ( http://www.ua.es/ Universidad de Alicante, Spain) the domains for studens are @alu.ua.es

In Spain each University have differents domains so I hope that more Spanish studends give feedback to this post.

I’m sure that this decision will bring your loyal customers, good job 😉

    Sorry for my English.

  95. Siggi Bjarna says:

Could you please add Iceland to the list

    @ru.is – Reykjavik University

Masaryk University has e-mails ending @mail.muni.cz for students and teachears, although we have normal ISICs. Hope this helps!

  106. Ricardo Gesuatto says:

While this is great news, I wonder how Student Licenses will be made available to universities in Brazil… Most of them have a domain ending in “.br”. For example, email addresses from my university (Federal University of São Carlos) ends with “ufscar.br”.

Maybe it’s worthwhile to create a page where institutions can apply and submit the necessary information, in order to enable Student Licenses for a domain? Just a suggestion :)

  107. Here in Antwerp Belgium we use @student.kdg.be for our students and @kdg.be for the profs. Could you and these please. We are using Intelligence from version 3 and are addicted to it. Karel de Grote-Hogeschool should be familiar to you or at least to the sales/classroom license department.

  108. Diftraku says:

I’d love to register using my uni’s e-mail but it’s not .edu

Can you add @tvz.hr for Polytechnic of Zagreb (http://www.tvz.hr/en/)?

  110. Rouven Weßling says:

First of all great offer, I’ll take you up on it.

You might be interested in knowing that there are libraries to identify educational email addresses. The most popular is probably swot (https://github.com/leereilly/swot) which is a ruby gem, but I’ve seen implementations in other languages using the same data.

  111. Jacobs says:

Please add @jacobs-university.de for the students of Jacobs University Bremen. For faculty this can be used: @.jacobs-university.de (it would be great to have it at least for the EECS department).

  112. Kyle says:

I’m in the US but my school does not provide a .edu e-mail. Do you plan to do something similar to Amazon where you can provide proof of full-time student (ie. with a class schedule, as I used) or what are my other options here?

    Thanks

  113. Michael Necio says:

I think most universities in Canada just use something in the style of u[city].ca, it would be great if you could go through them and add them.

PS. Specifically, may you please add uwindor.ca?

  114. Celso says:

What does this mean for people who currently have an education license. I am a high schooler that purchased an IntelliJ education license around a year ago. With this new system, would I be eligible to receive free updates?

Thank you and love the product,
    -Davis

Hello Davis, thank you for your question and support. The Academic License has been replaced by the Student License program so they are essential two different things.

When you purchased an Academic license you received a perpetual license of IntelliJ IDEA which means you keep the product and get one free year of updates included.

With Student Licenses and upon verification, you are able to use the latest versions the approved products for one year. After that you will need apply again. You can keep applying as part of the program the entire time you are a student, assuming it is with an approved school.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any more questions.

Many universities these days grant .edu addresses to alumni and let them continue to use them after graduation…. you will be flooded with requests from people who have not been students for years or who have taken a single class once upon a time. Sadly email addresses are horrible validation for students..

@stud.hioa.no and @hioa.no for Oslo and Akershus University for Applied Sciences.

I get the JetBrains Product Pack for Students, but I can’t activate resharper in VS2010 or VS2013…it’s always asking for a license key and I can’t login with my jetbrains account.

  242. kotah says:

    Hello.
I applied to student licence now.
I have a academic licence of resharper which I bought last year but is it able to upgrade this to a personal licence?
Will it become automaticly personal licence?

  243. Could you please add also domain *@ue.wroc.pl. This domain is used by Wroclaw University of Economics. In Poland it is not so common to use edu domain.

  244. D.Xenakis says:

I have an academic license since few months.

-Your website says this about current Personal Licenses:
Licenses are perpetual for the licensed version of the software.

-The following is part of my Academic License:
    =======SOFTWARE PRODUCT========
    Product Name: PyCharm Professional Edition
Licensed Version: the current version and any new product release which is made generally available before 6 July 2015

My academic license has changed to a personal automatically, or should i do something for that to happend?
In case i have to do something to upgrade to personal, would this cost me anything?
If i upgrade to personal license, will i be able to download all latest updates availiable until 6 July 2015?

  245. Dion says:

JetBrains, add your offer to the Github Student Developer Backpack (!) :
They deal with the verification for you, have all – even inconsistent European/German University – domains and could use a strong IDE like jetbrains to power all the other offers. Just provide verified students (like myself) a coupon code within the back pack and get rid of the idea to collect all possible school forms of this planet (!?). Take a look, corparate contact at the bottom https://education.github.com/pack

    • Robert Demmer says:

Dion, we already have a working verification in place that includes European and German Universities. If they aren’t included at the moment, there is a simple way to add yours.

    • Eugene Toporov says:

      Hi Dion,

We’re actually in contact with GitHub. They approached us after we launched our program lo let us know about their plans. We discussed ways to collaborate but there was not enough time for us to integrate with them properly.

Anyway, I think it is still possible and thanks for the suggestion.

Hello Filippo, head on over and give your university a shot. There is a good chance it is already on our approved list. If it is not you can request that we add it. Please follow these steps:

      -> Visit http://www.jetbrains.com/student
-> Click “Apply” and enter the information and using your university email.
-> If this doesn’t work you be notified on this page and will need to add your university for approval.

  247. Changcheng Li says:

It’s a great news! This act will certainly let more people know about and use the great tools from Jetbrains!
By the way, I’m an Academic Licence user now. In the blog, it says the Academic Licence can be upgraded to Personal Licence. How could I do it? Could I do it for free?

    • Robert Demmer says:

Thanks! You can continue using your Academic License (assuming you don’t mean the new student license) indefinitely. If you are no longer an eligible student for the free student license program, you can upgrade to a personal license for the upgrade price. sales at jetbrains would be able to provide you with more specific details.
