Help us Choose a Name for our Go IDE

Posted on by Andrey Cheptsov

As you may know, Gogland is the codename for our new Go IDE that we’re building on top of IntelliJ Platform. While we’re working hard on the IDE itself, trying to make it fast and smart, we’re also brainstorming its final name. This is something you can contribute to!

Please share your suggestions with us here in the comments, or by replying to the official tweet or Facebook post.

The name will be chosen by the JetBrains team hopefully in the next week. Later we will announce it with one the upcoming posts.

What name are we looking for? Something easy to pronounce. Easy to spell. Ideally, a one-word name (that hopefully isn’t someone else’s trademark). On the other hand, don’t be limited by any rules. Suggest what you think is best. All ideas are welcome!

If your name is chosen, you stand to get a spiffy prize (it’s a secret for now) along with a free 1-year subscription to all JetBrains products!

Go!

Please don’t use “gogen” because it’s hard to pronounce correctly and remember when heard. Learn on my mistakes.

  167. Eric Wendelin says:

I think the name should be true to the Go Gopher mascot as is done in the names PyCharm and RubyMine to make it also consistent with other IDEs in the JetBrains family.

I tried to think of something good related to gophers that would make a catchy name, and the best I can come up with is “GoChannel” for 3 reasons:
    * Channel is a synonym for “dig” which obviously gophers do
    * Channels are a concurrency concept in the Go language itself
    * I could not find anything claiming that trademark, and @GoChannel has been abandoned for some time.

Perhaps this line of thinking may help others come up with even catchier names.

I think IntelliG would be great. It would fit the naming scheme of IntelliJ and I like that name. The pronunciation is quite good. I really would love to see this one.

Of course IntelliG IDEA would work too without any problems 🙂

    GoPolyphony

    From Wikipedia:
In music, polyphony is one type of musical texture, where a texture is, generally speaking, the way that melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic aspects of a musical composition are combined to shape the overall sound and quality of the work. In particular, polyphony consists of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody, as opposed to a musical texture with just one voice, monophony, or a texture with one dominant melodic voice accompanied by chords, which is called homophony.
