What’s mining: Rails console

Just yesterday a new feature became available in RubyMine: the Rails console.

Now you can use the console for whatever you got used to.

Open it with Run | Run Rails console…, select the environment you want to use

and do what you need:

The console provides syntax highlighting, commands history using Up/Down arrow buttons,
And you can configure the console colors in Settings | Editor | Colors & Fonts | Ruby Console.

The feature will be available in the nearest public build of RubyMine.

I am using IDEA with the Ruby plugin (226725 – the latest version right now). i don’t see the rails console. Is this going to be available only on RubyMine, or is it going to be introduced into the plugin soon? Also, I know that the project setup and configuration UI is quite different between the two, are there any other significant differences planned between the plugin version and RubyMine?

    Hi Arnon,

    >or is it going to be introduced into the plugin soon?
Yes, sure! Rails and IRB consoles support required adding some new IDEA API so the plugin will work only with next IDEA EAP and we are planning to update it after releasing the EAP.

    > between the plugin version and RubyMine?
Yes, in RubyMine we try to simplify IDEA UI for Ruby language context and it’s use cases. Also RubyMine wont have Java/JRuby integration. All other features will be the same.

is it possible to break the line when the code does not fill the screen like in a normal console? This is really annoying.
    Thank you for any help.

  7. Hi Florian,
